ThePhilippinepostalsystemhasahistoryspanningover250years.ThefirstpostofficewasestablishedinthecityofManilain1767.ItwasorganizedunderanewpostaldistrictofSpainin1779,encompassingManilaandtheentirePhilippinearchipelago.In1783,thepostalservicewasorganizedinthePhilippines-overseasmailfromthePhilippineswasconveyedtoEuropebySpanishshipsviaeastboundroutesthroughMexico.Lateron,thepostaldistrictwasre-establishedonDecember5,1837.Afterayear,ManilabecameknownasaleadingcenterofpostalserviceswithinAsia.SpainjoinedtheUniversalPostalUnionin1875,whichwasannouncedinthePhilippinestwoyearslater.
DuringthePhilippineRevolution,PresidentEmilioAguinaldoorderedtheestablishmentofapostalservicetoprovidepostalservicestoFilipinosduringthattime.OnSeptember5,1902,itwasorganizedasabureauundertheDepartmentofTrade(currentlyknownasDepartmentofTradeandIndustry)byvirtueofActNo.426,whichwaspassedbythePhilippineCommission.ThePhilippinesfinallyjoinedtheUniversalPostalUnioninJanuary1,1922asasovereignentity.
TheManilaCentralPostOfficeBuilding,thecenterofthePhilippinepostalservicesandtheheadquartersofthen-BureauofPosts,wascompletedin1926.ItwasdestroyedduringWorldWarII(1945)butwasrebuiltin1946,afterthewar.
TheManilaCentralPostOfficelocatedatLiwasangBonifacioisaneo-classicalbuildingdesignedbytwoAmericanarchitectsandaFilipinonamely:RalphDoane,TomasMapua,andJuanMarcosdeGuzmanArellano.ThePostOfficeBuildingwasconsideredasthegrandestbuildingduringitstime,andisnowconsideredasoneofthedominatinglandmarksinMetroManila.
WiththeoverhaulofthePhilippinebureaucracyin1987,theBureauofPostwasrenamedthePostalServiceOffice(PSO)bythevirtueofExecutiveOrderNo.125issuedbythen-PresidentCorazonAquinoonApril13,1987.ItwasalsothatorderwhichplacedPSOundertheDepartmentofTransportationandCommunications(DOTC).OnApril2,1992,byvirtueoftheRepublicActNo.7354issuedbythen-PresidentFidelV.Ramos,PSObecameagovernmentownedandcontrolledcorporationnamedasthePhilippinePostalCorporationofmorecommonlyknowntodayasPHLPost.
